Irish proverb:
Never iron a four leaf clover, because you don’t want to press your luck.

Irish Blessing:
May you always find three welcomes in your life: in a garden during summer, at a hearth during winter and in the hearts of friends throughout all of your years.

Our March speaker, Helen Battersby has shared a list of Irish Gardens in her presentation, some charming Irish quotes and a plant list.

List of Gardens Visited

Helen Battersby’s Irish Gardens: Prehistoric, Historic, and Modern

Prehistoric:

Céide Fields, County Mayo

Ireland’s most extensive Neolithic archeological site, dating back nearly 6,000 years, and the oldest known system of walled agricultural fields in the world.

Inisheer, Aran Islands

With signs of habitation from the Bronze Age, at least 1,000 years ago, Inisheer is the smallest of the three Aran Islands. Today, these islands in their entirety are listed as Special Areas of Conservation due to their extensive diversity of endemic plants.

Historic:

Powerscourt House and Gardens, East Wicklow

With gardens dating from 1731 – and, in fact, an important site from medieval times – Powerscourt has been rated by National Georgraphic as #3 of the top-10 gardens in the world, after Versailles and Kew.

Kylemore Abbey, Connemara

Originally created as a residential manor by Mitchell Henry and his wife Margaret in 1867, since 1920 it has been managed as a girls’ school and, now, garden attraction by Benedictine Sisters. The Victorian Walled Garden is a living garden museum.

Ilnacullin on Garinish Island, West Cork

On an island in Bantry Bay, Ilnacullin was intended as the home for John Annan Bryce and his wife Violet, and the sub-tropical plants they collected. Built between 1911 an 1914, and designed by Edwardian landscape architect Harold Peto, it’s one of Ireland’s most-visited gardens. https://garinishisland.ie

Modern:

Jimi Blake’s Hunting Wood Gardens, Wicklow

One of Ireland’s most exciting contemporary gardens from garden designer and plantsman Jimi Blake. A book about the garden A Beautiful Obsession is co-written by Noel Kingsbury. https://www.huntingbrookgardens.com

Quote from the garden:

“I would like to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.”

– Irish poet John O’Donohue from the poem ‘Fluent’ in his book Conamara Blues.

June Blake’s Garden, Wicklow

Five minute’s drive from her brother Jimi’s garden, this is the creation of a brilliant but untrained garden designer and nursery grower. Like Jimi’s, the contemporary garden surrounding Victorian farm buildings is set on a portion of the former family farm. http://www.juneblake.ie/cms/

Quote from the garden:

“May I have the courage today/To live the life I would love,/To postpone my dream no longer,/But do at last what I came here for/And waste my heart on fear no more.”
–
John O’Donohue

How to Pot Up Plants

Potting Up Plants

Topic: How to properly pot up plants for our Spring Plant Sale

Janet Haynes Graham is a member of the  Etobicoke Master Gardeners.  She joined the group shortly after retiring 4 years ago, following a life time of gardening and a career in earth science and environmental compliance.  Janet is growing her interest in native plants and understanding the battle against invasives in our natural and cultivated areas.  And of course she is engaged  in the constant challenge of getting the garden “just right”.

At our April 6th meeting, Janet shared the proper steps to potting up plants.
