      <image:title>Learn - Source Native Seeds</image:title>
      <image:caption>One of the best things winter offers us gardeners is time to reflect and plan for our next growing season. Consider what worked well, and what you would do differently. What did you learn about your growing space last year? What new things will you try this year? Hot drinks and seed catalogues can help a lot, so why not take a little time and look into what native seeds/seedlings are available for the spring? https://www.wildflowerfarm.com https://stemsflowerfarm.ca https://onplants.ca https://www.nativeplants.ca https://www.originnativeplants.com https://beeart.ca It is always best to order from seed suppliers that are in your own region, if at all possible. When you order from a local grower you are getting seeds saved from plants that have adapted to our local climate, soil and growing conditions. As an extra bonus, you can get specialized advice and growing tips directly from the people who grow these plants, and you’ll be investing in small businesses that are committed to local bio-diversity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Winter Sowing</image:title>
      <image:caption>Seed shopping is the easy part - now let’s get our hands dirty! A lot of native seeds require cold stratification to grow well. That’s because they have adapted over thousands of years to our local growing conditions, and that includes winter. So your best bet when growing native seeds is to do winter sowing. This is a fun and inexpensive way of starting your native seeds. You do this by making a mini greenhouse out of an empty, clear plastic jug or food container, planting it with potting soil and your native seeds, then placing it outside. That’s right. Outside in that grey, horrible, cold. Let them be snowed on and rained on (Note: if it is a very dry winter you may need to moisten the soil every now and again, but if your greenhouse is covered with snow you are set!) Leave them out there until they miraculously start growing shoots in the spring time! Then you will transplant them into your chosen space into the garden. Because a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a link to a very good instructional video by Garden Answer, that will walk you through how to do winter sowing. Think how good it will be to see your first butterfly, your first bumble bee, and think what good work they will be doing in your garden this growing season! You can do something sweet for them (and yourself) this winter by preparing to add more pollinator plants into your growing space.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Skip Garden Cleanup</image:title>
      <image:caption>I know, I know - this is going to be hard! Your hands itch for the snippers when you see those straggly hosta stems. But wait! This past summer’s dead stems are the prime nesting ground for bees and other pollinators to spend the winter. If we keep our gardens well manicured and bare, there is nowhere for them to burrow and make a winter home. Leave the cleanup until LATE in the spring, after the bees have woken up and flown off. Have a friend hide your secateurs (to remove temptation), have a glass of what you like best (to calm your cleanup jitters), and learn to appreciate nature’s “rough-around-the-edges” beauty.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Learn - Don’t Bag your Leaves</image:title>
      <image:caption>While you are relaxing, enjoying the fall and not cleaning up the garden, why not take it a step further and leave your leaves until spring? Many butterfly caterpillars drop down from the trees to pupate using leaves as cover and protection in the winter months. Raking and bagging the leaves destroys those chrysalises. Instead, you can gently rake the leaves onto your beds and leave in place there - that will give the added bonus of mulching your plants at the same time!</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/61e1abe744f8dd3b789d8619/352e5949-61b0-432d-a807-72dbfc4a513a/garrison-stribling-y6jq2_p4FkY-unsplash.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Learn - Leave some Deadwood</image:title>
      <image:caption>I know I am going against every “tidy garden” instinct, but hear me out: many bee species overwinter in holes burrowed into dead wood, so if you have fallen branches (and unfortunately, most of us have had plenty come down in recent storms) don’t haul them to the curb. Find an out of the way spot in your garden and make a little stick pile, use some as edging on your beds, or simply tuck them in behind your taller plants. They can be out of the way, but still incredibly useful as a winter home to sleeping bees.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Plant a Tree</image:title>
      <image:caption>Don’t worry - even if you can’t tidy, you can still get out in your garden and get your hands dirty! The fall is an ideal time to plant trees and shrubs. Seek out some native species that are a good fit to your light and soil requirements, and they will provide so much to your garden’s ecosystem, from a nesting site for birds and pollinators, to a source of food in pollen, to shelter in the winter. If you’ve lost a tree in one of this summer’s storms, now would be a wonderful time to choose a native tree (or two!) to replace it. The fall is also a good time to plant some native Ontario plants - now that the worst of the heat is past, your plugs and transplants will take much better.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Plant Some Spring Bulbs</image:title>
      <image:caption>Remember, the thaw is coming earlier these days, which means the bees are waking early, sometimes before there is enough blooming for them to eat! Help them out by adding some early blooming spring bulbs or some early flowering trees/shrubs like serviceberry, choke cherry or eastern redbud to your landscape - now is an excellent time to plant them!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Module 1: Getting Started A good starting point for pruning is to make sure your tools are in great shape year-round. Module #20, shares some top cleaning, sanitizing, sharpening and storage tips for pruning tools. Make sure your plants are in good condition by removing dead, diseased, or damaged stems as soon as you see them. Dead stems attract insects and invite diseases to develop. Also remove crossing branches, water sprouts (vigorous upright growing shoots that form on trunks or side branches), and suckers (vigorous shoots that develop near or from below ground). <image:title>Learn - Pruning 101 - Module 2: Pruning Hydrangeas</image:title>
      <image:caption>Many hydrangea types bloom on old wood, including pink, blue, or white mopheads and lacecaps, or oakleaf forms. Prune these types of hydrangeas before midsummer. If you prune them in winter or early spring, you'll be removing flower buds. With newer reblooming types, like the Endless Summer® Series or Let's Dance® Series, which bloom on new growth as well as old wood, when you prune is less critical. Even if you cut off some of the flower buds by pruning the old stems, the plant will bloom on the new growth. White-flowered paniculata (like varieties 'PeeGee' and 'Limelight') and arborescens (including 'Annabelle') types flower on new wood, so they can be pruned any time other than just before they bloom. <image:caption>Early-spring bloomers, like lilac, forsythia, and rhododendron, produce flowers on wood formed the previous year. The best time to prune them is late spring, immediately after they finish blooming. If you prune them later in the growing season or during winter, you'll remove flower buds and decrease the amount of spring bloom. Test Garden Tip: To keep spring bloomers flowering vigorously, remove some of the oldest shoots all the way to the ground. This allows younger stems to grow and bloom. <image:title>Learn - Pruning 101 - Module 7: Pruning Clematis</image:title>
      <image:caption>Regular pruning of clematis encourages strong growth and flowering and keeps the growth in check. If left unpruned, clematis can turn into a mass of tangled stems with bare base and flowers well above eye level. Quick Fact Suitable for: Most clematis Timing The main pruning season is late winter to early spring, but some can also be pruned in early summer after their first flush of flowers. Herbaceous clematis Prune herbaceous clematis such as C. heracleifolia, C. integrifolia and C. recta to near ground level in early spring or late autumn. There are 3 groups of Clematis based on blooming times: Group 1: Spring blooming This group doesn’t require much pruning except to clean up dead branches/leaves. Prune mid-to late spring, after first flowering. Click here for Group 1 pruning guide. Group 2: Summer blooming Prune in March and after the first flush of flowers in early summer. <image:caption>There are several types of roses including: shrub, miniature, ground cover, hybrid, rambling and climbing. Pruning for each type of rose varies so please click on underlined words to be directed to specific rose type pruning guidelines. The Royal Horticultural Society offers in-depth pruning guidelines and videos which you can access by clicking here. David Austin®Roses offers video tutorials for pruning different types of roses which you can access by clicking here. Treat climbers and old garden roses that bloom only once per year the same as other spring-blooming shrubs - prune after they finish blooming. Repeat bloomers, including hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, miniatures, and modern shrub roses - prune mostly to shape the plant or to remove winter-damaged canes. If they become overgrown, cut them back in early spring. Photo Credit: Odile</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Pruning 101 - Module 9: Pruning Clipped Hedges</image:title>
      <image:caption>Shrubs like boxwood and privet are often sheared to form a hedge. To maintain a solid wall of green, shear the new growth frequently during the early part of the growing season. (Late winter to early spring or mid- to late summer are some of the best times to prune hedges.) Keep the top narrower than the base so that the upper branches don't shade the lower ones. Stop shearing the hedge about six weeks before your area's average first frost. Test Garden Tip: If you're growing a privacy hedge, reduce the amount of pruning maintenance needed by selecting shrubs that grow only as tall and wide as necessary to provide screening. Allow them to grow into their natural form, and you won't have to prune very often, if at all. Photo Credit: Janet Mesic Mackie</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Pruning 101 - Module 10: Deciduous Shade Trees</image:title>
      <image:caption>Prune shade trees like oak, linden, and ash when they are dormant in winter. It's easiest to see the branching structure at this time of year, and you're less likely to spread diseases through the pruning wounds. As with non-blooming shrubs, avoid pruning them late in summer. Test Garden Tip: Trees that produce a heavy sap flow when pruned in winter—maples, birches, elms, and dogwoods—are known as "bleeders." The sap flow may be unsightly, but it doesn't harm the tree. To avoid the bleeding, you can wait until the leaves have fully expanded in summer to prune these species. Photo Credit: Per Breiehagen</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Pruning 101 - Module 11: Pruning Fruit Trees</image:title>
      <image:caption>Apples (including crabapples), peaches, pears, plums, and cherries should be pruned in midwinter. Although winter pruning removes some of their flower buds, the goal in pruning fruit trees is to open up the tree to allow in more light for a better crop of fruit, rather than to get maximum bloom. Dormant pruning is especially important for apples, pears, and crabapples because pruning wounds during the growing season expose the trees to a bacterial disease called fireblight. Test Garden Tip: To control the spread of diseases while pruning, dip your pruning shears in rubbing alcohol or a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water. <image:caption>Most broadleaf evergreens, including holly, Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium), and some types of magnolias, don't need much pruning. The best time to prune them is in early spring, just before they put on their growth spurt. You can do minor shaping and pruning at other times of year, too. <image:title>Learn - Pruning 101 - Module 18: Pruning Cane Berries</image:title>
      <image:caption>Raspberries and blackberries grow on long stems called canes. On most types, the cane doesn't fruit until its second year of growth. After bearing fruit, the cane dies. But new first-year canes develop at the same time, and will bear fruit the following year. Remove dead, two-year-old canes soon after they finish bearing. They won't fruit again, and they can spread disease if left to grow. Pinch back the tips of first-year canes when they reach about 3-4 feet to cause the cane to branch. Everbearing types of raspberries are an exception. They form a late-summer crop on the tips of first-year canes, so don't pinch them back in midsummer. Instead, allow the canes to flower and fruit for a fall crop. Remove the stem tips that have produced fruit in winter. The following summer the lower portion of the stem will fruit. After it finishes bearing, completely remove the fruited cane. Photo Credit: Granen Photography</image:caption>

Most training systems for grapes involve developing a main stem or trunk with several lateral stems or arms. Grapes fruit on lateral shoots from the current season's woody growth. Prune all grapes close to the lateral arms each year during the dormant season to produce the best fruit. The degree of pruning depends on the vigor of the variety: Prune vigorous varieties more heavily than weak growers. Photo Credit: The Old Farmer’s Almanac</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Native Plants - Snowberry, Symphoricarpos albus</image:title>
      <image:caption>I used to regard this hard working shrub with a snobby stink eye. I am not sure where I got the impression that a snowberry wasn’t ‘worthy’ but happily, I am now familiar with its attributes and have planted a few in my garden. What’s not to like? It grows almost anywhere, tolerates salt and can even be used as a hedge and a slope stabilizer. Its habit will be leggier in shadier parts of the garden, but it grows well in full sun to part shade. Hummingbirds and bees will visit the bell-shaped, pink flowers in the spring and the white berries persist into the winter. This plant is suitable for those looking to discourage deer from foraging in their garden. It will grow 3-6 feet with an equal spread. Mine grow mostly in dry conditions but the books say it would appreciate less-than-dry soil. My snowberries seem happy, bloom and berry up each year and give me absolutely no concerns whatsoever. No more stink-eye from me!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Native Plants - Nannyberry</image:title>
      <image:caption>One quickly learns when gardening with natives, there are quite a few stalwarts in the native plant line-up. These plants can be described as staunch, loyal, dependable, reliable, steady, constant and hard-working. One of my favourite stalwarts is the Nannyberry Viburnum lentago. I think this is terrific but I also like the white flowers in the spring and the gorgeous fall colour. The Nannyberry doesn’t stop traffic and is not meant to be a specimen but I rely on it to be a pleasant, constant, worry-free presence in my part-sun border. It is described as a tall shrub but my soil is clay and on the dry side so I am not too worried about the Nannyberry out-growing its welcome.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Native Plants - Pasque Flower, Pulsatilla Patens</image:title>
      <image:caption>The Pasque flower (Pasque is French for Easter) the first perennial to show its precious face in my early spring garden. It is also known as Anemone patens or Prairie Crocus. It is crocus-like in size but this plant has hairy stems and leaves and the seed head looks like tufts of feathery hair that is guaranteed to amuse long into the season. Its mauve to white petals surrounds a bright yellow mound of stamens. These shiny petals actually act like solar panels and the temperature inside a pasque flower can be 10 degrees warmer than the surrounding air. Hungry pollinators drop in for some food and stay around for the warmth!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Native Plants - Fothergilla, fothergilla Gardenii</image:title>
      <image:caption>A few years ago my children asked what I wanted for Mother’s Day and I replied that I wanted a Fothergilla gardenii. There may have been some eye-rolling and I think they were hoping I would say a box of chocolates but off they went to Plant World and came home with this lovely little shrub. In case you are also unfamiliar with a Fothergilla, here is what it has going for it: A sturdy, mid-border front or back yard specimen, vase shaped; fuzzy, greenish-white, fragrant spring flowers; unassuming during summer but holds it own around more aggressive plants; and gorgeous, long-lasting fall colour. This slow-growing shrub will grow about 3 feet tall and wide. I think I might ask for another this year!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Learn - Native Plants - The Great Blue Lobelia Lobelia siphilitica</image:title>
      <image:caption>Ok, with a name like that – one might think tall, delphinium-like perennials, stopping you in your tracks from the opposite corner of the yard! I ordered one and planted it in a mostly sunny spot and waited and waited. Some attractive foliage appeared but no sign of anything great or blue. I berated myself for not doing my research and popped a purple coneflower right beside it and called it a day. Well, surprise, surprise. During a late summer walk through the garden, I discovered the very pretty, long lasting but diminutive blooms of the Great Blue Lobelia. I think the ‘Great’ is the exquisite blue colour of the delicate two-lipped blooms. In my garden, the plantis about 15 inches tall and held its own with the coneflower I ingloriously plunked down beside it. I have come to adore my Great Blue Lobelia and will give it more room next year. The books say this plant needs a moist site but my garden is quite dry. It also says that it might re-seed readily – that would be all right in my books!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Flower Shows</image:title>
      <image:caption>The Etobicoke Horticultural Society has been hosting flower shows for many years. These shows include flowers, along with plants, fruit, vegetables, floral designs and special exhibits. Flower shows are the perfect tonic for gardener’s health and wellbeing. Our Flower Shows are a great way to learn, connect, be delighted and inspired by what our community members are growing in their gardens. Our Flower Shows take place at 6 monthly EHS meetings starting March through to October. The first show in March is unique in that it delights the ‘eating’ senses and gets us thinking about plants while we await the coming of Spring. All EHS members interested in participating in our Flower Shows are provided with a handbook (hard and digital copies) that includes everything they need on how to prep and enter along with how points are awarded and terminology is explained. A digital copy of the handbook can be found in the Members-Only section of the website by clicking here. Scroll down for all the details…</image:caption>
